Guwahati (Assam), Dec 06 (ANI): Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday suspected that China was behind the contamination of the Brahmaputra River after presence of slag and cement turned the water muddy. The Minister said that samples tested by the authorities possessed contamination and suspected China's construction of a dam behind it. The change in the colour of the river has become a matter of concern for the locals and the authorities. Local residents complained they were not able to use the river's water for drinking as it had become dirty. In 2016, China had declared that it would be building a dam on a tributary of the river, sparking Indian concerns of its potential downstream impact.
