Gov asks varsities to reach out to society with skill-based courses
Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya has said that universities should not only be centres for academics but also work for development of the society. Addressing a meeting of Vice Chancellors (VCs) of Gauhati University and Nagaland University, besides Principals of colleges, at Raj Bhavan in Kohima on Wednesday, Acharya said universities should reach out to people and introduce more skill-based courses in colleges as per the need of society.
He also suggested that universities indentify social activists, recognise them and confer them with honoris causa degrees for their contributions to society. The Governor also instructed Nagaland University VC Prof Pardeshi Lal to identify skill-based courses under Swayam and Swayam Prabha for the varsity that would be beneficial for Nagaland and as per requirement of the society.
He further suggested that all 66 colleges under Nagaland University may be entrusted to identify the courses and intimate the Governor’s office by January 15, 2018. He also asked the colleges to identify at least two entrepreneurs, especially women, for availing Mudra loan. Gauhati University VC Dr Mridul Hazarika informed the meeting that the university had taken initiatives in social sector. He said universities play a key role in promoting national and emotional integration through students.
Suggesting that varsities should recognise people doing exemplary work in society, he said Gauhati University was the first university in the Northeast to recognise social activists and confer them with honoris causa degrees for their contributions to society. On his part, Nagaland University VC said with the introduction of Swayam and Swayam Prabha programmes, learners could choose more skill-based courses. He explained that Swayam was a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve three cardinal principles of Education Policy, viz., access, equity and quality with an objective to take the best teaching-learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged.
He added that Swayam sought to bridge the digital divide for students who had remained untouched by the digital revolution and had not been able to join the mainstream of knowledge economy.
Prof Lal further explained that Swayam Prabha was a group of 32 DTH channels devoted to telecasting high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 bases using the GSAT-15 satellite covering diverse disciplines like Arts, Science, Commerce, Performing Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, Engineering, Technology, Law, Medicine, Agriculture, etc.
