Two construction workers kidnapped by suspected Kuki militants for a ransom amount of Rs 50 lakh were released safely following immense pressure from various circles, officials said on Wednesday.
The two workers - Amom Bishorjit Singh (32) of Nungoi Awang Leikai in Imphal East district and Thangjamson Simte (21) of Thanlon of Churachandpur presently staying in Imphal’s Mantripukhri – were reportedly released at Gangpijang hill range late last night.
Police, who have been conducting massive operations in the villages around the hill range with the support of the villagers, intercepted the two workers early this morning, around 3 a.m, an official source said.
They were the workers of Manipur Ved Vidyalaya building and abducted from its worksite at Charhajare under Sapermeina police station of Kangpokpi on February 27 last. The abductors later demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh.
Demanding safe release of the workers, residents of Charhajare in Kangpokpi district and Nungoi area in Imphal East have been staging protests in their respective areas in the last few days.
Police assisted by the security forces have also been conducting extensive search operations at various villages at the border areas Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts.
During the extensive search operation, a combined team of police and Assam Rifles yesterday (Tuesday) arrested one of the suspects involved in the kidnapping from the jungle near Joulen village of Kangpokpi district.
He was later identified as Thongkhohao Kipgen Haopu (40) of Gangpijang village. On interrogation, he disclosed that he was a cadre of KNF (N) and working under the command of Henkholen Kipgen James (32) of Gangpijang village. He further disclosed that the two workers were abducted by him and his three other associates.
Due to the massive operations and constant pressure from the police, the two workers were released near Gangpijang hill last night around midnight and the police along with villagers of nearby villages found them.
