Will DMDK prez be nabbed on his arrival at Chennai airport?
Vijayakanth in Singapore
Chennai: With a city court issuing a non-bailable warrant against DMDK president Vijayakanth, rumours are rife in political circles that the actor-turned-politician might be arrested on his arrival at Chennai airport from Singapore.
Interestingly, the order was issued in connection with an incident that happened at the same airport five years ago. In 2012, when Vijayakanth was on his way to catch a flight, he allegedly assaulted a reporter of a Tamil television channel and abused him, for posing a few questions.
Following this, based on a complaint from the journalist called Balu, the airport police registered a case against Vijayakanth and the then MLA Murugesan. On Tuesday, after Vijayakanth failed to appear before the court even after repeated summons, Alandur judicial magistrate N Sultan Aribeen issued the warrant against him.
Despite counsels appearing for Vijayakanth informed the magistrate that the DMDK founder had gone to Singapore for a medical checkup, he refused to accept the submission and slapped non-bailable warrant. The magistrate then adjourned the matter to February 13.
"Vijayakanth should approach the court before his arrival from Singapore and get relief. Otherwise, there are bright chances for him to get arrested at the airport itself," sources said.
