Recently there was a report in media about people with professional qualifications such as M.Tech, B.Tech, and MBA, postgraduates as well as graduates, applying for the work of sweepers and sanitary workers in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat. In another embarrassing moment for the Centre, an official survey, which has been withheld by the government, showed India’s unemployment rate rose to a 45-year high during 2017/18. Clearly, all is not well on the jobs front in the country.

Recently, a college student became witness to this situation, and was left awestruck when a postgraduate man came to deliver the food he had ordered online.

Narrating the whole incident, Shouvik Dutta wrote on his Facebook:

“It was one of those usual checkouts ordering food when I was taken aback after I was updated with the details of my delivery agent.”

Shouvik had ordered his food from food delivery app Zomato. The app allows people to know basic details about the person delivering their food.

For Dutta, Kolkata-based Meraj, was there to deliver the food. Apart from being fluent in Hindi and Bengali, the food delivery guy had also completed his post-graduation.

After knowing that Meraj is a well-qualified person, Dutta wrote:

“Probably the only time I regret ordering food from Zomato.”

In this Facebook post Dutta further added:

“We had a quick chat were I got to know he was an M.Com graduate from Calcutta University and also done PGDM in Finance or Investment banking something similar.”

Then he asked the pertinent question:

“What have we done to this country? What have we done to this state where a Master’s Graduate delivers food to the regular Undergraduate Teenager? What message does it send?”

Dutta’s FB post soon went viral and soon there was debate of availability of jobs in the country. Despite all the justifications given by the government on the jobs front, it seems like that there is a potentially dangerous situation building up that could lead to disruptions of our social fabric in the years to come.
