Priyanka Chopra Talks About #MeToo Movement And Her Own Sexual Harassment Experiences At Women In The World Summit.
Priyanka Chopra, who is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, recently appeared at the Women in the World Summit. She shared the stage with Tina Brown and addressed several important issues.
When asked if the #MeToo Movement has hit India, as well, the actress told Tina, “I don’t think it hit Bollywood the same way it hit Hollywood but I think there was and there is a period of time where women found the courage to be able speak up things that they hadn’t. There are incredible women who stood up and took on men in a very patriarchal country and that takes an extremely incredible amount of courage and I applaud that but there are so many stories that get shushed and that do get shut down because it’s patriarchal.”
“We have always had a voice but nobody heard us but now because of the support that we are giving each other people don’t have the ability to shut us down and that’s what happened in India. It was such a powerful thing to see for me as I have seen women who have talked about things that have happened to them and situations where they decided not to talk about it saying I don’t want to cause a scene, I don’t want to bring too much attention to myself, I will be blamed but that’s not the conversation anymore,” she further added.
When asked if she has experienced sexual harassment, the Indian diva said, “If I talk about sexual harassment, I think every woman has gone through it. Harassment and sexual harassment had become a norm with women, that it’s okay to slightly tap a woman on her bum and that its okay to make comments which are unnecessary and not required because boys will be boys. C’mon he is just being a guy! We as a society, we have had people whom we love and trust say that to us, that we never even question it. At least in my life time, this is the first time I am seeing women support each other so much, and come and stand with each other, that now if I have a story I don’t think I am alone anymore and nor am I ashamed of it. And may be because of my strength or your strength, it will give some girl who is sitting in the anonymity of her home not being even having a voice or a choice to have the power to do that.”
Priyanka will be next seen in The Sky Is Pink opposite Farhan Akhtar.
