Sibal expresses concern after Chidambaram arrest .... Watch video
New Delhi, Aug 22: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal expressed concern on Thursday after the court rejected an anticipatory bail plea of former union minister P. Chidambaram.
"It's a matter of great concern to us. When a high court rejects an anticipatory bail and that also after the person has been protected for 15 months in one case and about 13 months in the other case," Sibal said in a statement.
"The judge hears the matter, reserve order on the 25th of January and then passes an order after 7 months, 2-3 days before his retirement, not giving us enough time to move the supreme court. In those circumstances, the supreme court should have allowed the hearing," he added.
"All that we wanted was a hearing."
On Wednesday evening, high drama preceded Chidambaram's arrest as CBI officials scaled the walls of his Jor Bagh residence here, minutes after his press conference at the party headquarters where he said he was "not hiding from the law but seeking protection of the law".
"Some days ago when Ispoke in Parliament, I had said that every judge in this country will uphold the liberty of a citizen. I had said that the collective conscience and the institutional memory of the court as a venerable institution will guide all judges of the country as much as I believe in liberty.I also believe in the wisdom of our judges. So friends, until Friday and beyond. There is hope that the lamp of liberty will shine bright and illuminate the whole country," he added.
His son, Karti Chidambaram, thanked the Congress party for its support to his father and slammed the "drama and spectacle" being enacted by the probe agencies was for the "voyeuristic pleasure of some".
"The drama and spectacle being enacted by the agencies is to simply sensationalise and satisfy the voyeuristic pleasure of some," he tweeted as CBI and ED officials scaled the boundary wall of the Jor Bagh residence of his father to arrest him.
"I am thankful to the @INCIndia Shri @RahulGandhi, @priyankagandhi, for their support. And ever grateful to @KapilSibal, @DrAMSinghvi, @salman7khurshid, Afor being there with us throughout.
"I have been raided 4 times. Appeared for over 20 summons. Each session for a minimum of 10 to 12 hours. Been a "guest" of the CBI:) for 12 days. There is still no chargesheet for alleged events which apparently took place in 2008 and a FIR in 2017. There is no case," he said in a series of tweets.
On January 25, the Delhi High Court reserved order on Chidambaram's bail plea in the case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The agencies had opposed Chidambaram's bail plea, saying his custodial interrogation was necessary as he was evasive and had given false information during questioning.
The high court had on Tuesday rejected the bail plea.
Chidambaram spent a quiet night in the CBI guest house on the ground floor of the agency headquarters after his dramatic arrest, officials said on Thursday.
Chidambaram, 73, was kept in the suite 5 of the guest house, they said.
It is normal for the agency to keep high security arrested accused in the guest house to ensure proper security and monitoring, the officials said.
Chidambaram, accompanied by the members of the investigation team, was brought to the CBI headquarters at around 10 Wednesday night, they said.
After a thorough medical check-up by a doctor from the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, he was taken to the room where he spent a quiet night, the officials said.
Mostly, they said, he remained silent except answering a few queries as and when questioned by the CBI officers.
His questioning will start at around 10 Thursday morning under DySP R Parthasarthy who is leading the probe in the alleged corruption in Rs 305 crore clearance given to INX media when he was the Union finance minister, the officials said.
The firm once promoted by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, both in jail for murdering latter's daughter Sheena Bora, had allegedly made payments to a firm linked to finance minister's son Karti Chidambaram, the CBI has said in the FIR.
P Chidambaram has strongly denied the allegations, saying the payments were for consultancy and his son was in no way associated with that company.
