The National People’s Movement (NPM) will hold a conference on ‘An alternative national policy for the country’ tomorrow (10) at Hall De Galle in Galle, its Galle Organizing Committee Member Eng. Anura Disanayake said.

Dissanayake who is also Central Committee Member of United Professionals’ Movement (UPM) was speaking at a media briefing on the conference which will be conducted by NPM leader and former Auditor General Gamini Wijesinghe and former Deputy Director of Internal Intelligence Dr. Ajith Collonne.

“Power-hungry and short-sighted politicians acting in their narrow selfish interests have suppressed our potential as a nation and a country for more than 70 years. Their self-centered policies have driven our people and motherland politically, socially and economically to destruction making the entire nation the inheritors of poverty and hunger,” Disanayake said.

“Our country which is amply endowed with exceptional and exquisite natural and human resources has been devastated owing to selfish policies upheld for decades by all political parties of the country. Regardless of the sufferings and adversities of the masses, the politicians, their families and close associates and friends grabbed wealth by selling the country’s cherished national resources,” he said.

All sectors such as agriculture, industry, education, health, environment, ethnic and religious harmony and international relations, the Judiciary and law and order have been ruined due to the self-centered strategies of politicians,” he said.

“Our country needs a potent public force to empower the masses. With that objective, we have formed the United Professionals’ Movement which is an amalgamation of existing alternative organisations, including the UPM and Deshodaya Movement. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed among the participating groups and the policies and administrative guidelines will formulated and finalised by a leadership board of the movement. The NPM board will take a collective decision over nominating a suitable independent candidate who will not be connected to any political party.”

The NPM’s Galle District Organizing Committee members Hemantha Withanage, Abeysiri Gunawardana, Anura Disanayake, A.W. Nimalakeerthi, N.D. Liyanage, Chandana Wasantha and Raveendra Wimalarathna participated in the media briefing.
