KCR brings back son, nephew to cabinet

After almost a year in power for a second term in a row, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had brought back his son, K T Rama Rao and nephew T Harish Rao into his cabinet on Sunday. He expanded the cabinet as expected by many political circles in the State. This had set aside all speculations over a possible split in the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi with Harish Rao leading the splinter group.

After the 2018 elections to the State Assembly and the return of the TRS to power for a second term, KCR kept both his son and nephew outside the State cabinet. However, son, K T Rama Rao was made the working president of the TRS, completely giving him charge of the party affairs, while Harish Rao, equally important and strong leader both in Telangana and the ruling TRS, was kept aside. It was assumed that Harish was kept aside only to handle the party for the impending Lok Sabha elections. But, it did not happen. KTR handled the party affairs on his own, while Harish had no role in the Parliament elections. Interestingly, Harish Rao’s intervention in the Assembly elections had fetched at least 30 to 35 Assembly seats for the TRS. Both KTR and Harish Rao were seen as two strong pillars for the TRS, but KCR had crippled one pillar, Harish Rao, after the 2018 elections.

There were signs of discontentment in the TRS over the last few months. Senior ministers like Etala Rajendra was giving some dissent indications which had support from other important leaders like Balka Suman. The discontentment was growing slowly, which was smelled by several leaders in the ruling TRS and as well as other political parties. The discontentment was seen as greater threat to the leadership of KTR, who had been working with the party rank and file to build the party and keep it strong and waiting to succeed his father some time later. However, before this discontentment developed into a major issue, the chief minister had silenced it by taking both KTR and Harish Rao into the cabinet. Besides the other four new faces in the cabinet, who took oath on Sunday, Sabita Indra Reddy and Puvvada Ajay Kumar, are seen as strong leaders representing their own community, besides their districts, useful for the party in the impending local body elections.
