Stockholm, October 8: The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded on Tuesday to James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz. One half of the Nobel Prize is awarded to James Peebles “for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology” and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz “for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.” The award ceremony was held at Stockholm in Sweden.

The Nobel Prize academy tweeted, “The 2019 #NobelPrize in Physics has been awarded with one half to James Peebles “for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology” and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz “for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.”

Pebble is a Canadian-American physicist and theoretical cosmologist who is currently the Albert Einstein Professor Emeritus of Science at Princeton University. Peebles has made many important contributions to the Big Bang model. Apart from Nobel Prize, he also received Harvey Prize in 2001, Dirac Medal in 2013 and Member of the Order of Manitoba in 2017.

On Monday, the 2019 Nobel Prize for Medicine has been jointly awarded to William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. The jury stated that the three researchers established the basis for the understanding of humans of how oxygen levels affect cellular metabolism and physiological function.
