NRL news: Joel Thompson in bad accident, airlifted to hospital
Manly Sea Eagles star backrower Joel Thompson was reportedly airlifted to hospital over the long weekend following an accident at a party.
The 31-year-old, 220 game NRL veteran was at a party following the Koori Knockout when he was found unconscious on the Central Coast according to Channel 9.
An image of Thompson laying on a hospital bed in a neck brace was posted to social media with the caption stating he was involved in a “real bad accident”.
“Hey everyone I’ve had a real bad accident — won’t be talking to anyone for another week,” Thompson wrote on the photo.
“Big lesson learnt around drinking and partying. Thinking of you all.”
Thompson was at the recent Koori Knockout tournament on the Central Coast, but didn’t play as he was still recovering from a broken arm suffered while playing for the Sea Eagles in round 23.
He is currently without a contract for the 2020 season but is expected to stick with the Sea Eagles.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, Thompson shed more light on the incident from the weekend.
“I just caught up with mates and rolled down a big hill until I hit a rocky end,” he said.
“My head hit it hard and I didn’t think I’d survive. But I’ve come through it.
“I’m in survival mode and it’s been a mess but I am OK.”
