Iraqi national undergoes marathon surgery in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A 68-year-old Iraqi national, Adhab Abbas Kadhim, underwent two simultaneous complex procedures including heart valve replacement and gall bladder removal at KIMS Hospital, Kondapur. The surgeons also used a tissue heart valve manufactured by Indian company Meril out of bovine pericardium, the thin sac that surrounds the heart.
In a marathon surgery that lasted for over six hours, the patient from Iraq underwent heart valve replacement surgery, which was led by chief cardiac surgeon of the hospital Dr Nisarga. The gall bladder removal surgery (laparoscopic) was performed by senior gastroenterologist Dr Vijay Kumar Bada and team.
Kadhim, residing just 20 km away from the capital city of Baghdad, was suffering from a severe heart valve related problem. “He was barely able to walk without breathlessness. Multiple tests revealed that he had Severe Mitral Valve Regurgitation i.e. leak in one of the major heart valves and inflammation of gallbladder with stones. As he had typical abdominal symptoms also, we worked along with our surgical gastroenterology team,” Dr Nisarga said in a press release.
The cardiac and gastro team decided to do simultaneous heart and abdominal surgery as a lifesaving procedure. Following the surgery, the patient was discharged on the fifth post-operative day without any complications.
